In Latvia’s climatic conditions, where winters are cold and the soil can freeze to a depth of up to 80 cm, special attention must be paid to the depth and materials of the base to prevent the risk of freezing and movement.
It is recommended to use concrete foundations or a ready-made base frame to ensure durability and safety.
A concrete base is one of the most durable options. The recommended concrete layer thickness is 10–15 cm, with a thicker edge around the perimeter up to 20 cm to ensure additional stability and resistance to freezing. The concrete should be reinforced (with wire or metal mesh) to prevent cracking and ensure long-term durability. Before pouring the concrete, a layer of gravel or crushed stone at least 10 cm thick should be installed, compacted, and leveled. The concrete base should be poured on a prepared base, maintaining level and horizontal alignment. It is also important to ensure drainage to prevent water accumulation under the base. Concrete blocks or base anchors can also be used to reinforce the concrete base.
A paver base is more flexible and suitable for smaller greenhouses. The recommended paver layer thickness is 5–7 cm, laid on a 10–15 cm compacted layer of gravel or crushed stone.
